Archives For ambient

PL▶Y is a new monthly Ambient, Downtempo, Avant-Garde, New Age, (etc. etc. etc.), night at Eclipse Lounge Pittsburgh in Lawrenceville. I started it last month with a few friends. It’s on the second Saturday of every month. The first event was a really great night. I have been trying to get a night like this started for a long time, and I am extremely pleased that it has finally happened. I believe that there is a need in the PGH for a regular event that is on the more low-key end of things. But, if you don’t feel like keeping things chill and want to dance and sweat until the sun comes up, PL▶Y is always before the Humanaut curated Hot Mass.

The second PL▶Y happens this Saturday (click on the flyer to see the Facebook event page). Hopefully I’ll see you out there.

If you want to hear what PL▶Y sounds like, check out the recording of my set below the image.

Yes. I know. I promised you things:

Trip reports.
Photos.
Me not being silent.
Candy and cake.
A third gorram season of Twin Peaks!

But, it just didn’t work out. I had a big trip report nearly ready to go about everything that happened right before Life Is Good started, but then Life Is Good started. I got caught up in the whole business of the conference and hanging out with people I haven’t seen in forever and meeting new people. And I’m lazy. And after the end of the conference, I went to Las Vegas to spend a week having a father+son vacation with my dad.

Do you think I got much writing done in Las Vegas? Of course I didn’t, but I finally got to see Penn & Teller.

After that, I headed back to Pittsburgh and my family, and had to take a few days to decompress and recover from the desert heat. As soon as I felt like doing any work, I went to the computer with every intention of posting all the details and photos. I ended up working on music. And that was going so well that I just had to keep going at it. Then our cat Lain died. He just suddenly keeled over and was gone. Kind of took the wind out of my sails for a bit.

The bad news for you, my friends, is that a Trip Report is going to be long in coming (if it comes as all), and when it does it just might be a mad and unorganized photo dump. I’m sorry.

The good news is that my Red Lauan Tree project is about to release a new record. It’s one of the best records that I have ever written. I’m really proud of it. It’s a mostly ambient affair. On the dark side, but not oppressive in its sound. I think that I walked the edge between sounds very well. There is a ton of live and analog instrumentation buried under the layers of the final mix. But it’s not the kind of album that uses rainsticks and wind-chimes as instruments. Think more along the line of Coil’s Unnatural History or the song Radio Void by Chris & Cosey. But not really at all. It is its own thing. I guess that means that I’m finding my voice musically!

The full album clocks in at just about an hour long and I expect it to be out by the end of the week.

For May Day this year, I recorded two pieces of music. One is an ambient/drone and the other is a more beat/percussion based piece. I had planned to do videos for the both of them and have them out the door and onto the intertubes with a quickness. But, as my wife broke her tibia and can’t walk for a couple of months leaving me to pick up the extra slack around the house, I have gotten a wee bit behind. That has worked out for the best, though. With the extra time it has taken to get these tracks out into the wild, I have decided to release the videos for the two May Day tracks as well as add two companion pieces along with some poetry and make a short EP to put up on my Bandcamp site. I am (hopefully) going to make this a month long project, and release a part of the package in various places every Monday in May.

So today is the official release of the video for Another May Dance. It is a 9.5(ish) minute long ambient piece. This is one of my favorite pieces that I have written. It is a true ambient piece in the tradition of Brian Eno. You can let it wash over you as you passively listen, but active listening brings out details and textures that are hidden to the casual listener. There is a simplicity and calmness to it that I really dig, but there is also a bit of menace underlying the track. In the cycle of May Day celebrations, Another May Dance would be the vigil leading up to the lighting of the Beltane fires (which is what happens in next weeks video).

The Another May Dance video can be found on either my YouTube channel or my Vimeo channel.

Also the two other EPs on my Bandcamp site are both pay what you want with no minimum.
