L’Shanah Tovah

On Rosh Hoshana their destiny is inscribed,
and on Yom Kippur it is sealed.
How many shall pass away,
And how many shall be brought into existence
Who shall live and who shall die…

-B’Rosh Hashanah

Tonight is the first night of Rosh Hashanah, so a hearty Shanah Tova to anyone out their that observes. In our house after the Autumnal Equinox and Rosh Hashanah, we always laugh that we’ve only got four more kinds of “New Years” celebrations to go before the new year will stick.

The song B’Rosh Hashanah is traditionally sung at (ready?) Rosh Hashanah, and every time that I hear it I think about the Leonard Cohen song “Who By Fire”. It is in essence a secularized version of this hymn. It’s also one of the best songs ever written. This version is a live one with the help of Sonny Rollins. Enjoy!

And did I mention that Sonny Rollins is un-fucking-believable in this? Great dieties that guy can blow…
