When one has once fully entered the realm of Love, the world — no matter how imperfect — becomes rich and beautiful, it consists solely of opportunities for Love.
-Søren Kierkegaard

Today I have made it through a decade of my walk with my wife. Ten years in which she has held me and helped me, loved me and been loved. A decade in which she has mothered my son and kept me alive, dried my tears and shed them with me. I have no way of ever expressing to her how much she means to me. I can only tell her that I have no doubt that I wouldn’t have survived these last ten years without her. I hope that the next ten years will find us even stronger. As it has been said, we have much to do before the day is through.

So, Nick… sing her a love song for me:

I love you, Michele! I have swam in the eternal dream sea with you countless times…

Love doesn’t just sit there, like a stone, it has to be made, like bread; re-made all the time, made new.
-Ursula Le Guin, The Lathe Of Heaven

The current bit of unrest in the United Kingdom has everybody making armchair sociological statements about what is going on with the poor and disenfranchised. I am here to set everything straight for you. There is a movie called “Fear Of A Black Hat” that came out in 1994. It is a mockumentary in the vein of “This Is Spinal Tap”. Think “CB4″, but actually funny. And relevant. In “Fear Of A Black Hat”, there is a scene in which the lead rapper in the film is discussing his new book. He makes reference to “the riots”. The riots he is talking about are the LA Riots of 1992 that were sparked by the acquittal of the police officers who beat Rodney King for allegedly being a black male.

The statement translates directly to what is going on now in England. What is going on is the inevitable pressure release that unequal power dynamics will lead to. The underclass can be disenfranchised for only so long before they have to take to the streets and blow off some steam. It is like great tectonic plates rubbing against each other. The plates will go year after year just grinding against each other, building tension. But after a while, that tension has to be released and you get an earthquake. People die and millions of dollars worth of property is destroyed. Tragic, but unavoidable. The causes of much of this tension can be traced back to people with stupid ideas in their heads (you need to read the article that links to).

I am in the process of upgrading my blog to run on the Standard Theme by 8bit.io. It is a super theme with a TON of features. So far it has been a relatively painless upgrade/transition. The smoothest ever blog overhaul that I’ve ever done. BUT – there are still some minor tweaks and changes that are being made on an hourly (sometimes minute by minute) basis. AnsComm might not be working correctly some of the time that you come to visit. Patience is the watchword. One moment you might see the new look, the next you might see an error message (or on occasion, nothing at all). Features may be implemented and disabled on a whim. Be calm. Everything will be alright. FNORD.
